Penobscot River Mall Admission Standards

Penobscot River Mall seeks to include only members who will reflect well on each other. This section outlines the standards that we consider when inviting businesses to be members.

What We Look For in Prospective Members

• A for-profit business in Maine
• A place of business regularly open to the public
• A good reputation in the community
• Ultimately, approval at Penobscot River Mall's sole discretion

The requirement for a place of business open to the public may be waived for professionals such as carpenters, electricians, and the like, who routinely do their work at their customer's location.

Disqualifiers

Penobscot River Mall does not want members who

• Sell tobacco products
• Sell alcoholic beverages
• Sell lottery tickets

Exceptions

Penobscot River Mall may make exceptions to these standards in individual cases if in its own judgement it is a good idea to do so. Generally, Penobscot River Mall does not intend to make many such exceptions.

Format and Content Standards

Member Page Format

Each member business has a Penobscot River Mall presentation page. Penobscot River Mall seeks to maintain a consistent look and feel among member pages so that visitors will have a feeling of being at the same virtual mall as they move around among them. Each member business should have a logo or other image in the upper left corner of its web page. A size of 125 x 125 pixels is preferred, but minor variations are permitted. The text should be in simple HTML. Components such as headlines, paragraphs, and emphasized or strong text may be used. Fancier components, such as tables or frames should not be used. The presentation may be the equivalent of about one or two typewritten pages.

Preferred Categories

Penobscot River Mall has prepared a list of preferred categories to be used as the headings for business types in the Yellow Directory.  If your business fits into one of these categories, we would like you to choose that category for your business listing.  If your business does not fit in one of these categories, Penobscot River Mall will consider adding an additional category for you.

Links from Member Presentations

Only one link out of Penobscot River Mall is permitted in a member's presentation page, and that must be a link to the member's own website for the same business. A mailto link is also permitted. The member presentation may also contain links to extra value enhancements provided by Penobscot River Mall such as announcement pages or virtual car lots for automobile dealers.

Content Standards

The content of a member's web page must be in good taste, legal, and morally appropriate, and must not violate the acceptable use policy of the web hosting company that provides service to Penobscot River Mall. This applies to user-maintained enhancements such as announcement pages and virtual car lots, as well as to the primary member presentation page.

Technical Limitations

Penobscot River Mall is a service designed primarily for smaller scale businesses, and, as such, has some technical limitations. A member company is limited to a single location in a single town in the "By Town" directory, and a single listing in the yellow "By Specialty" directory. A member may list up to eight products or services in the "Products" directory. There is also a limit on the number of characters in each listing. These technical limitations are imposed by the automated software used to maintain Penobscot River Mall.
